Gentle Currents is a small wool design & art studio in Fobbing, Essex — a converted room of light, a basin of warm water, and a quiet rhythm of hands. Everything you see was designed and felted here, on a wooden bench, with water, soap, and time.
Branka designs and makes baby cocoons, bags, waistbelts, waistcoats, jewellery and scarves that drape softly, and one-of-one wall pieces that hold their own light. The shapes are sculptural. The colour stories are taken from the night sky — nebula pinks, soft lilacs, star-gold. Wool, made cosmic — because the Universe is all around, and we are a part of it.

Felt has been made for at least eight thousand years. Long before weaving, long before dye-houses, long before mills — people understood that warm water, friction, and the natural hooks on wool fibres would lock those fibres together into a cloth that would never come apart again.
Wet felting is that ancient method, unchanged. Wool is laid in layers, soaked in warm soapy water, agitated by hand. The fibres draw together. The cloth thickens. Hours pass. What comes out is one continuous piece — no seams, no stitches, no machine has touched it. Just wool, water, hands.
“You can't rush felt. The fibres only lock when they're ready. You learn to wait, and then the cloth comes.”
The result is a fabric that is structural without being stiff, warm without being heavy, and old in a way that machines can't replicate. Every Gentle Currents piece begins with this — wool, water, time.
Wool fibres trap air, regulating temperature on cold days and warm ones. It keeps a newborn the right temperature without effort.
Unlike synthetics, wool wicks moisture away rather than holding it. Soft skin stays dry.
Pure wool is one of the gentlest fibres on a baby's skin — naturally antibacterial and lanolin-rich.
A wool piece, looked after, outlasts almost anything in your wardrobe. Mended once, it lasts a generation.
Pieces come and go — every one is one-of-one. If something speaks to you, take it home. If it's gone, ask us about a commission.
